When you finally get the airship -> the world is just as desolate as you got the impression it was. I guess? They feel kinda limited in scope and simple and without much explanation. The characters and the townspeople, not bad. Better to just pick a good one, set it and forget it. There are way too many overly complicated "talismans" and your characters can ever only hold one each, so researching and switching them in and out is time consuming. Lots of rearranging every time you change team and so many triple techs (and many double techs) that you only have pieces of for a long time. The spritnite (think FF7 materia) quickly became tedious because they are numerous and you cycle them all to achieve optimal combos based upon current party. The outdoor battle areas are also beautiful, but by contrast all the dungeons look the same and are drab, grey, and boring. On the bright side, I thought the characters, worldmap, and towns and trees/plants to be very beautiful. I'm far more likely to revisit this in the future than FF6-10 even though I can recognize it's a worse game.Ħ0% Nintendo SwitchI liked this game at first but I found it had a lot of pitfalls the longer I played. It's aesthetics are amazing and the combat is really engaging. All that criticism aside, I still really enjoyed this game. Also, I have to point out the striking similarities to FFX in the story. Really, the last 5 hours just feel like a rushed first-draft compared to the rest of the game. The final decision is idiotic as well, and I still don't understand it. The story is already about cycles through generations, it didn't need cycles through time travel, and in my opinion lessened the impact of everything that happens at the end. The story ropes in time travel at the last minute too, which felt unearned and unnecessary. You also get the last party member at this point which just felt bizarre. I don't know why these weren't available earlier, especially once you got the airship and had very little to use it for. It's super linear until you're at the door to final boss AFTER the final dungeon, when the sidequests are finally unlocked. Even one of the main end bosses 1-shotted my entire party at full health, what? This is why I hate this genre. Most of the optional fights really felt unfair and enraging and I happily avoided them. Buffing either for or against you can quickly make a fight unwinnable on either side and feel like bs if you're on the receiving end. As the user reviews described to me, the combat can be described as glass-canons, meaning high damage and quick death. I think they could have done more with the snow setting, as each template (forest, cave, ice, temple) is copy-pasted 2-3 times, though this isn't a huge deal. This game never ascends to greatness but I find this game so much more engaging on a moment-to-moment basis than most JRPG's, largely because of Chrono Trigger's solid foundation and similarly great pacing at around 25 hours. I see why so many think this game is unremarkable but I loved it from start to finish. 80% Nintendo SwitchI love Chrono Trigger, snowy settings, and depressing piano music so this game had my name all over it.
